He commenced specialist practice in Periodontics in Perth in 1978, having completed his postgraduate training at The Royal Dental Hospital, University of London. For over forty years, he has maintained his specialist private practice, together with an active role in teaching at UWA - both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He retired from his position as Clinical Associate Professor at UWA at the end of 2014, but still maintains a keen educational interest by mentoring dentists pursuing postgraduate qualifications from The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). In 2012, he was inducted into The Campbell-Wilson Roll of Honour by the UWA Dental Alumni Society for his contribution to dental education in Western Australia.

Dr Tan has been a Consultant Periodontist at Perth Children's Hospital for over 40 years, and was past Chairman of the Dental Department. He remains committed to the care of children with special needs, especially in multi-disciplinary cleft lip and palate treatment.

Research and teaching has been an integral part of Dr Tan’s professional life. He has lectured extensively in national and international meetings and conferences, and has been involved in professional organisations at all levels. He is a Past President of The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), which is the national organisation of the specialty. For his services to the Academy and the specialty, he was honoured with Life Membership of ANZAP in 2017. His research has resulted in numerous publications and he has also been a supervisor for several research projects undertaken by postgraduate students at UWA leading to specialisation.

Above all, Dr Tan believes in the importance of periodontal and oral health, as an integral part of good general health. Treatment of periodontal conditions, and subsequently the maintenance of periodontal health in a caring and friendly environment is the ultimate objective of the practice.
